Room to Read

Room to Read is a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.

Room to Read’s innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in low-income countries during two time periods that are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school to teach children how to read and write and secondary school for girls’ education. Room to Read works in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Founded in 2000, Room to Read has benefited 12.4 million children across over 20,000 communities and aims to reach 15 million children by 2020.

To date The Mead Family Foundation, in partnership with local communities, has endowed 10 schools, 11 libraries and 14 reading rooms, educating over 8,000 children in 6 countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
