The 2019 UAL Mead Rome Phd Residencies Announced

University of the Arts London recently announced the three recipients of the 2019 UAL Mead Rome PhD Residencies, congratulations to Remi Allen, Karl Foster and Elin Karlsson.

The awards covered the cost of their four-week studio residencies at the British School at Rome in July and provided the three PhD students with a contribution towards their travel expenses and subsistence costs. The residencies are a unique opportunity for the students to develop their practice in the vibrant community of scholars and artists of The British School at Rome.

Remi Allen

Chelsea College of Arts

To further enhance her research regarding the female form, Remi intends to produce a body of work that explores female mythic imagery and representation. The myth of the Vagina Dentata has origins in several ancient cultures – Remi’s work aims to visualise the myth, from a non-white feminist slant.

Karl Foster

Chelsea College of Arts

Karl will explore the Roman/Greek plaster cast as emblem of aesthetic values and pedagogical methodologies that may be distantly reverberating with the objects he has been making as part of his developing research.

Elin Karlsson

London College of Communication

Weaving fictional writing, theory and creative works together in a practice that is rooted in the domestic, Elin will work on an expanded methodology for understanding domestic photographic practices, with a focus on connectivity across the Mediterranean.
